MinnTech PlasticsThermoforming Design
Starting from concept sketches, we develop full 3D CAD models and machine precision aluminum molds via CNC. The result: production ready tooling built for high volume runs in APET, RPET and CPET.
Packaging Design and Development
At MinnTech Plastics, great packaging starts with great design. Our Rogers, Minnesota based engineering team partners with you from the earliest concept stage, turning product requirements and market insights into optimized thermoformed packaging solutions. With deep expertise in APET, RPET and CPET materials across every gauge range we process, we design packaging that performs on the production line, on the shelf, and through end of life recovery.
Product Assessment & Concept Sketches
We begin by reviewing your product geometry, weight, fragility, and shelf display requirements. From that assessment, our engineers produce initial concept sketches that define cavity shape, flange width, stacking features, and closure geometry before any CAD work begins.
3D CAD Modeling & Draft Analysis
Using advanced 3D CAD modeling, our engineers create fully parametric mold designs that incorporate appropriate draft angles, corner radii, and wall thickness considerations. Simulation tools are used to verify consistent formability and performance across the intended material range.
Concept and Design

Matched Steel Rule Dies
Steel rule trim dies are custom built to match each mold's cavity layout. Hardened cutting edges produce clean, burr free flanges without the micro fractures that can occur with punch and die trimming. Dies are shimmed and aligned to within ±0.005″ for consistent trim quality across all cavities.
Inline Trim Press Integration
Trim tooling is engineered to mount directly into our inline trim stations, eliminating the need for offline secondary operations. This integration reduces handling, shortens cycle times, and ensures each part is trimmed in register with the formed cavity for uniform flange width.
Trim Scrap Recovery
Skeleton trim scrap is automatically granulated and reprocessed at our partner facilities, supporting closed loop material recovery. Trim tooling is designed to produce the narrowest feasible web between cavities, minimizing scrap percentage and improving material yield per sheet.
Rapid Prototyping & Sample Evaluation
Prototyping bridges the gap between CAD design and production tooling. MinnTech offers both 3D printed prototype Tool and single cavity aluminum sample tools so you can physically evaluate form, fit, and function before committing to multi cavity production Tool.

Single Cavity Aluminum Samples
When tighter dimensional accuracy or higher sample quantities are needed, we machine a single cavity aluminum tool. Parts produced from this tool are dimensionally identical to final production output, making them suitable for fill line trials, retailer presentations, and regulatory testing.
Prototype to Production
Choosing the right tooling stage depends on your project phase, volume requirements, and timeline. The table below compares MinnTech's tooling options from rapid prototyping through full production.
| Tooling Type | Material | Cavities | Lead Time | Number of Parts | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3D Printed Prototype | High temp resin (or filled polymer) | 1 | 3–5 days | Roughly 12 parts | Concept validation, initial form/fit checks, quick customer samples |
| Single Cavity Aluminum | Aluminum | 1 | 3 weeks | On the order of 50-100 parts thermoform | Production like samples, process tuning, short pilot runs |
| Multi Cavity Production | Aluminum | Multi cavity depending on parts size | 8-9 weeks | Large production volume 1,000,000+ | Large volume production runs |
